BRIEF
Capture the iconic Illawarra Gymea Lily for a local art exhibition.
CONCEPT
Through this series of nine 20mm x 20mm hand drawings, I aimed to capture the life cycle of the Gymea Lily from shrub, stalk, bud, emerging bloom, ripe bloom, mature bloom and seed pod. The Gymea Lily is magnificent and striking native symbol of the south coast with their gigantic spear shaped leaves and towering stalk crowned by a deep red cluster of blooms. We moved to the south coast from Sydney 5 years ago. During the many weekend house hunting trips we drove through the National Park or Heathcote. The emergence of the Gymea Lily under the towering gums between giant bolders on the steep ravines lining the road came to signify the crossing of an imaginary line as we left Sydney behind and travelled to a new Eden. Drawings based upon my own photographs.
