PARRAMATTA EELS NRL CLUB - The jersey was planned to be worn during the televised ANZAC day match in Darwin as part of the Parramatta Eels relationship / partnership with the NT Government. Production pending.
BRIEF / CONCEPT
The theme of this Parramatta Eels ANZAC jersey is the centred tri service 50th Anniversary of the end of Australian involvement in the Vietnam War 1962 to 1972/1973. The staged withdrawal of Australians from Vietnam was actioned in 1971/1972 with the last major unit returned home in Dec 1972. The final declaration of the end of Australian involvement occurred in early 1973, redeployment of the last platoon in mid 1973 and final ADF evacuation of embassy staff in 1975. The name of the major ARMY element in Vietnam was the ANZAC battalion. Vietnam was one of Australia's most significant and longest campaigns at the time, in which 60000 Australian's served, with 512 killed and 3000 wounded.
The design commemorates all three services : RAN / ARA / RAAF.
The RAN is represented by HMAS Hobart II destroyer, named "the Green Ghost" , which providing crucial naval gunfire support among other roles and was awarded meritorious service.
There were only 4 Victoria Cross recipients for Vietnam all from the ARA, WO2 Keith Payne VC OAM, WO2 Rayen (Ray) (Simmo) Simpson VC DCM, WO2 Kevin "Dasher" Wheatley VC , and MAJ Peter Badcoe VC , who received the highest award for their gallantry and courage under fire. The 3 Warrant Officer VC comrades from the Australian Army Training Team, are honoured in this jersey design. The other ARA representative soldier is CPL Reginald Hillier, the only Northern Territorian killed in action, included to acknowledge the Parramatta Eels special relationship with the Northern Territory. CPL Hillier was one of many soldiers finally repatriated home in 2016 after 50 years as part of "Bring them Home" campaign led by Mr Bob Shewring OAM. CPL Hillier's home now serves as the meeting point for the Vietnam Veterans in the region. Also shown are the ARA tank, artillery and armoured personnel carriers.
The RAAF are represented by the iconic Bell UH-1B Iroquois "Huey " "Bushranger" helicopter gunships with No 9 Squadron in support of 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF), Caribou "Wallaby" Airlines with No 35 Squadron, and Canberra Bomber, "lady of the skies" with No 2 Squadron "Magpies".
2022 marks a number of milestones and linkages between the past and today that are interwoven in this design storyline. Firstly the 75 years anniversary, of the formation of Parramatta Eels in1947 and the Australian Army formation from the Commonwealth Forces in 1947. Secondly, the end of a long 20 year campaign in Afghanistan in 2022, during which 39000 Australian service personnel served, Thirdly, 50 years ago, ANZAC day march in 1972 was the first year that the RSL finally recognised the Vietnam Veterans and allowed them to lead the march. In 2022, the Afghanistan veterans lead the ANZAC day march in Sydney.
As a long serving RAAFies with Air Mobility Group (AMG), my spouse and I are both current serving veterans from Kuwait (Kath) /Afghanistan (both) / Iraq (Ad). Air Mobility continues to live the motto "first in ..... last out", with service in all majors and in between. We are very proud of the linkage to our honoured RAAF forebears from tactical and strategic air lift / transport. I personally have alway had a soft spot for the Huey, which was the first RAAF aircraft I flew in as an air cadet and a maiden name "Bell". I also worked with the Caribou before they were retired from service. As part of the illustration of the Iroquois I was honoured with the opportunity to speak to the Vietnam National Serviceman who took the source photo and hear his personal story. I was also very deeply humbled honoured to speak to the NOK of the VC recipients and the President of Veterans Australia Northern Territory.

“They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget”
